As a result of initiatives by the former Lib Dem administration of Oxford City Council, the council was recently presented with a Carbon Trust award, given in recognition of the work that the council is doing to reduce its carbon emissions by a quarter by March 2011 and then by 3% each year.

Said Lib Dem group spokesman for climate change, Cllr Jean Fooks: "It makes sense that this work should be a priority for the council, not only because it reduces carbon emissions, but because it saves the council taxpayer money."

As an example of initiatives which will make a difference, energy saving covers were installed earlier this year at the council's swimming pools, and the council is now reaping the benefits as energy costs soar. Further projects such as voltage optimisers and water-monitoring equipment are being brought on-line.
